Water (Bottle) Mound - 1000 water bottles, 150 x 150 x 110cm, 2003

Cyprus Residency

In Cyprus (2003) there were a vast number of mounds left behind on the landscape by companies constructing ‘paradise villas’.  Smaller mounds were also made by tourists who collectively left behind a substantial amount of their own litter. Water (Bottle) Mound is created with over a 1000 discarded empty water bottles collected from the roadsides and beaches of Paphos highlighting this issue.

The natural formation of each mound inspired the below drawings.

The paper mounds are a conceptual but personalised re-imagining of the displacement of natural material taking place in the landscape. Each tiny piece of paper is indented with my fingernails.
